Ann Cleeves lives near Whitley Bay. She is best known for her Inspector Ramsay novels that are set in the Northumberland. “Red Bones” is the third title of Ann Cleeves’ Shetland series. The main part of the book is set on the island of Whalsay, where Sandy and his family come from. Two young students are conducting an archaeological dig on a site at Whalsay, owned by Mima Wilson — Sandy’s widowed grandmother. The old lady is kind and gets on well with the young women, until the students discover a skull and some bones buried on the property. Hattie, one of the students, is remarkably excited by the find as she believes it will suspect her theory that there was a well-established old trading route, confirming the island a powerful commercial force in its time. In the meanwhile, a shooting accident takes the life of an elderly woman which results in calling Jimmy Perez by her grandson, Sandy Wilson. He finds two feuding families whose envy, greed and bitterness has divided the surrounding community. With Fran in London, and surrounded by people he doesn’t know and a community he has no links with, Jimmy finds himself out of his depth. He gets little help from recalcitrant islanders who help him to move behind the mysteries. When an investigation rolls on, another death occurs that makes Jimmy to struggle a lot in this case. Red Bones is an excellent, absorbing and page-turner, which is quite as assured and entertaining as its predecessors. Did Jimmy unbind the interweaving mysteries?
